Winter is a magical time of year, and we want to share our best tips and tricks for creating the perfect Winter outfit. As temperatures drop and weather sets in, our layering guide will help you stay warm this Winter without sacrificing style. Our secret? Layering. So grab your peppermint latte, and get ready to embrace the season!

The Basics of Layering- Fashion Meets Function

Layering is key to creating the perfect Winter outfit. You can layer your outfit by combining multiple pieces of clothing to create a chic and functional look. Winter weather can be unpredictable, but when you layer, you can take pieces off or put them back on to adjust to the weather. Layering also gives you a chance to show your personal style with different combinations of your favorite pieces.

There are three types of layers. First, we have the base layer. You’ll wear this layer close to your skin, so it should be comfortable and breathable. We love camis, tank tops, and fitted long-sleeve shirts. Next comes the middle layer. These are pieces that add insulation and provide warmth. Think sweaters and vests. Last is the outer layer. This layer protects you from the elements. The right coat or jacket can add a super chic element to any outfit and keep you warm and dry.

Choose the Right Fabrics

Fabrics can make or break your outfit. Choosing the right fabric for each layer will make you feel confident and cozy.

For base layers, choose lightweight materials like moisture-wicking blends or comfy cotton to keep you comfortable and dry without adding bulk. (If you plan on working out, skip the cotton and opt for an athletic fabric instead). Base layers should be form-fitting to avoid added bulk. You can also use a base layer to add a little pop of color or pattern for a personal touch. We like this versatile mesh top from Free People. Let the polka dot turtleneck peek out of your neckline or cuff. You can also layer it under an open cardigan, then shrug off the cardigan when it warms up.

For middle layers, choose fabrics known for their warmth. Wool is famous for warmth, and classic knit sweaters are trending this Winter. You can wear a long-sleeved base layer if you don’t love the wool texture against your skin. Fleece is also a go-to for softness. Want the ultimate luxury? Cashmere is both warm and timeless.

For outer layers, choose weather-resistant fabrics to match your climate. For colder and wetter climates, water-resistant quilted jackets, puffy jackets, and raincoats are good options to keep you comfortable and protected. For warmer climates without much rain, denim is a solid choice for a casual look. Looking for an edge? Leather jackets are a must-have. Prefer the classics? A trench coat is a fashion staple. Remember, your outerwear should be practical (not just stylish), so look for versatile pieces with adjustable features or removable hoods to ensure you’re ready for anything!

Mix Textures to Add Interest

Playing with textures is a great way to show your personal style and create interesting outfits. Incorporating different textures also adds depth and dimension, elevating any outfit.

Here are our tips:

  • Combine structured pieces with soft ones to create contrast. A soft knit sweater with a structured leather blazer is a fool-proof Winter look. We also love a chunky sweater with a silky skirt.
  • Use different textures to create a visually rich outfit. Mix a velvet blazer with a sheer blouse and wide-leg faux leather pants, and you’ll be oozing confidence. Other Winter textures to try are denim, corduroy, chiffon, suede, twill, satin, lace, and flannel.

  • Accessorize with textures to add depth to your look. Bags, scarves, hats, and other accessories made from different textures are perfect. A suede bag, plaid scarf, or leather headband can add a hint of sophistication to any outfit.

Embrace Winter Colors

Autumn brings a color palette inspired by the changing leaves, featuring warm tones like burgundy (it’s everywhere right now), mustard, forest green, and mahogany.

When selecting your colors, be sure to consider your skin tone. For those with warm undertones, shades such as rich terracotta and deep browns can enhance your natural glow.

For those with cool skin tones, the autumn palette shifts slightly to incorporate jewel tones and cooler hues. Think deep emerald, navy blue, plum, and rich charcoal. These colors enhance your natural undertones and provide a striking contrast.

Want a chic way to create a cohesive outfit? Try a monochromatic look by wearing different shades of the same color. For instance, pairing ivory with varying shades of beige can result in an elegant, layered outfit. Mix textures like knits and wovens to add depth, and finish with accessories in a contrasting hue.

Style Tips for Layering Like a Pro

Focus on Footwear: Footwear can really define your Winter look while keeping you cozy. Some Winter favorites for keeping warm are booties, knee-high boots, and moto boots. Plus, you can wear socks, which is a game-changer. If you’re feeling a little bit playful, cute socks can peek out from booties or knee-highs. To dial up the boldness, pair some funky mesh socks with heels to really make a statement. For added warmth, throw on a pair of tights underneath. You can experiment with patterns and colors to complement your outfit.

Don’t wear too many layers: You’ll be hot and uncomfortable. Avoid overly thick pieces, especially if you’re planning on wearing a coat.

Thin to thick trick: Keep thinner layers closer to your skin and increase thickness as you get further away. For example, start with a silky cami, add a chunky knit sweater, and top off with a trendy trench coat.

Mind proportions: Balance oversized pieces with fitted ones to maintain a flattering silhouette. Pair those wide-leg trousers with a slimmer-fitting top or tucked-in shirt to create a streamlined look. You can also play with layering—like an oversized cardigan over a fitted turtleneck. This not only keeps you warm but also adds interest to your outfit.

Experiment: Fashion is all about self-expression, so experimenting with new combinations and trends can lead to some exciting discoveries. Mixing unexpected colors or trying bold accessories can completely transform an outfit. Don’t be afraid to play with layering, too—like adding a statement belt over an oversized dress or trying a patterned scarf with a simple outfit. If you feel confident and comfortable in what you’re wearing, it will shine through.

Confidence is Always On-Trend

Layering can be a fashionable and functional way to stay warm in the Winter season, express your personal style, and create fresh new looks. Embrace your creativity, and you’ll be the most confident woman in the room. And that, darling, never goes out of style.
