In a world where Instagram filters and glossy magazines often set unrealistic beauty standards, embracing body positivity has been a profound and transformative journey for me. It’s not just about loving your body; it’s about embracing your entire being. It’s a journey for me to recognize that my vulnerability is, in fact, my superpower. I’d like to be open, honest, and share my journey and insights on embracing body positivity, why it’s vital, and how you could embark on this life-changing path with me. After all, that’s what PI is all about beauty from within.
What Does Embracing Body Positivity Mean to Me?
Embracing body positivity isn’t just about posting hashtag-worthy affirmations; it’s about looking in the mirror and genuinely accepting what you see. Now I’ll be honest, not every day feels like I’m fully embracing myself. It’s a journey and I’m not striving for perfection, just more balance and kindness towards myself. I have good days and rough ones. However, on a good day, it’s empowering to fully accept and like who you are. It’s about understanding that the reflection staring back at you is uniquely beautiful, regardless of the world’s expectations. It’s about realizing that your worth isn’t skin deep; it’s a radiant light that shines from within.

For me, embracing body positivity has meant shedding the layers of self-doubt, comparison, and self-criticism. I’ve struggled with a very loud critical voice inside my head for years, and enough is enough. Instead, I’ve put up pictures of myself on my bathroom mirror from my childhood and learned to speak to the inner child within. It’s learning to treasure the skin I’m in, with all its quirks, scars, and imperfections. It’s realizing that my self-worth is not tied to the number on the scale, the size of my jeans, or the unattainable standards society imposes. My self worth is tied to all of me as a whole. Gone are the days of struggling to like my body, but embracing who I am as a woman.
How Can You Embrace Body Positivity?
- Start with Self-Compassion: Treat yourself with the same kindness and understanding you’d extend to a dear friend. When negative self-talk creeps in, gently remind yourself that you deserve love and respect. Do this as many times a day as it takes to start believing your words.
- Dismantle Beauty Standards: Challenge the one-size-fits-all beauty ideals. Recognize the beauty in diversity and uniqueness. It’s time to celebrate all body shapes, sizes, and colors.
- Build a Support System: Surround yourself with people who uplift and empower you. Connect with body-positive communities that will share their stories, struggles, and triumphs, offering you inspiration and motivation.
- Honoring Your Body: Listen to your body’s needs. Nurture it with nourishing food, and engage in activities that make you feel vital and alive. Your body is your companion, not your enemy.
- Clothing Choices: Choose outfits that reflect your style and make you feel comfortable and confident. Don’t let the latest fashion trends dictate how you should look or feel. Dressing for your body type is also crucial for feeling your best.
- Positive Affirmations: Replace self-criticism with positive self-affirmations. Remind yourself daily of your worth, your unique qualities, and the beauty within you. This is especially important on days you feel like you’re struggling. Also, remember, it’s okay to struggle, it’s part of the path forward.
- Realistic Goals: If you want to make lifestyle changes, focus on what genuinely makes you feel better and healthier physically and mentally. Set goals that align with your values, not just appearance.
- Seek Professional Help: If you’re struggling with body image issues that affect your mental health, it’s okay to contact a therapist or counselor. I personally am a big supporter of therapy and it’s helped me immensely during different times in my life. They can provide guidance, support, and a safe space to explore your feelings.

Why Is Body Positivity So Crucial to Me?
- A Journey to Mental Wellness: Starting my journey of embracing body positivity has transformed my mental health. It has given me the tools to combat feelings of unworthiness, anxiety, and even self-loathing, replacing them with self-love and acceptance. This didn’t happen overnight, nor am I even finished with the work, but I’m forever grateful for every step along the way. The goal isn’t perfection, just putting one foot in front of the other and having more good days than bad.
- Elevated Self-Esteem: My self-esteem has definitely been boosted as I’ve learned to love and accept myself. This newfound confidence has opened doors to countless opportunities I may have shied away from before. Hello, I started a whole company based on this entire message. I never would have thought it was possible before learning to accept myself. I didn’t have the courage.
- Enhanced Relationships: Embracing body positivity has taught me to value character and heart over appearance in others. This has deepened my connections and helped me attract people who appreciate me for who I am.
- A Cultural Shift: The body positivity movement challenges the harmful standards perpetuated by our culture. It encourages inclusivity and embraces diversity, redefining beauty in a way that includes all of us.
- Prioritizing Physical Health: Embracing body positivity has empowered me to make healthier choices based on what my body truly needs, not what the media dictates. The goal is health, not to ‘fix’ imperfections. I’m able to think more clearly, have more energy (a bonus since I have a toddler), and have had overall health improvements. Who doesn’t want that?

My journey to embracing body positivity has been a rollercoaster of self-discovery, acceptance, and empowerment. It hasn’t been easy and at times I definitely wanted to give up. On those days I remember that it’s also harder to keep hurting myself and holding myself back from my true potential and self and instead focus on the goal, of being someone who loves herself and keeps promises to herself. It’s about embracing my authentic self, accepting my unique beauty, and understanding that true worth is not found in a mirror but in my heart and soul. Embrace body positivity with me, and let’s light up our lives with the glow of self-love and self-acceptance. Together, we’ll embark on a journey towards a more beautiful world.
