Personal Style. These two simple words can be a mixed source of emotion for women. On the one hand, it can mean confidence and excitement and even boost our energy. On the other, it can be overwhelming, nonexistent, and intimidating. With such harsh contrasts, it’s no wonder ‘Personal Style’ is a complex hot topic. Let’s dive into what personal style is, why it’s important and simple tips you can do today to start your style discovery.
What is Personal Style?
People tend to think Stylists will ‘make’ them look great without understanding who they are and what they want. Anyone can look great in beautiful clothes. That’s the easy part, but whether it suits you, your lifestyle, your likes, or your interests is an entirely different story. This is where personal style comes in. Personal style is a unique expression of who you are. It’s the first visual impression you put out in the world without speaking. It is a reflection of your personality, interests, and values. It is a way to show the world who you are without saying a word.

Why Is Personal Style Important?
When discovering and defining your style, it is essential to consider your lifestyle, values, interests, or things you don’t like. Observe other people and pay attention to the colors, fabrics, and silhouettes you feel most comfortable in. Think about the activities you do and the places you go. Are you a professional who needs to dress for the office? Or do you prefer a casual look because you care for your children full-time? Maybe a mixture of both? Personal style is a reflection of who you are. It is essential to take the time to create a style that is true to you and your needs and that makes you FEEL confident and comfortable. With the right pieces and creativity, you can create a look that is uniquely yours. Then start showing the world who you are.

Tips To Start Defining Your Style
Where to start might feel daunting, but we promise you it’s much easier than you might think (and fun)! Follow these simple steps, and you’ll be on your way.
- Make A Lifestyle List – Write down your lifestyle commitments like office wardrobe, gym clothes, casual brunch outfits, date nights, etc. It’s important to know what you need so you stay on track and budget (the unfun part).
- Observe – This part is crucial if you need help learning your style. Start looking on IG, TikTok, and magazines; look at your friends and family and how they dress. Consider colors, fits, and accessories, and see what you like. Then copy. Copy the style, make it yours with items you may already own, and look for missing pieces or gaps. (Remember that list you made – make sure you’re buying things that make sense for your lifestyle)
- Pay Attention To Your Feelings – this part is the most important. Fashion is a tool to help you feel your best, not make you feel uncomfortable or be a false representation of who you are. Never let someone tell you what to wear, how to wear something, or pressure you into something you are not confident in. Fashion is your tool to express yourself and have fun. Who cares if it’s not trendy if you love it and feel amazing!?
- Closet Clean Out – this step is optional and only recommended when you’ve clearly defined and understood your style by completing the steps above. If you’re ready, then Marie Kondo, your entire wardrobe and only keep things that ‘bring you joy.’ This exercise will be much easier after you’ve done the fashion discovery work, so don’t jump ahead, or you might donate something you want later. Nothing feels better than a deep purge and loving the pieces you have.

Now Comes The Fun Part
Once you’re living your best Personal Style life and know what boosts your confidence, it’s time to play. Trends are much more fun when you can make them your own and feel confident to dive right in. Even if you want to dip your toe into the trend pond, you’ll feel so much more confident trying something new, and that’s what fashion is all about, feeling great and having fun. It’s art, after all.
